After Gainsborough

Gainsborough

‘After Gainsborough’ is a painting from Julie Colclough’s archive. It was painted in 1983 as part of her degree show, and lead to hundreds of commissions for London publishers as well as illustrations for the Sunday Times Magazine. After a long time in Julie’s professional illustration portfolio the original painting has recently been framed and may appear in the gallery at some point. We now offer a small edition of just 75 Fine Art limited edition prints from £100 unframed.

The original painting Mr and Mrs William Hallett A Morning Walk’ by Gainsborough is in the National Gallery at Trafalgar Square in London.

In these days of computers and digital pastiches of famous works of art it is interesting to remember that Julie completely hand-painted this series before Photoshop and digital art was invented.

Gainsborough painted his portrait in 1785. It is a double full-length portrait of William Hallett and Elizabeth Stephen, painted before their wedding on July 30, 1785. The handsome young pair are walking arm-in-arm on their morning walk with a Pomeranian sheepdog. They are dressed elegantly, perhaps in their wedding clothes. This type of portrait, which showed the sitters in a natural setting dressed in their finest garments, became fashionable among wealthy patrons in the late 18th century.
