Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy
An original painting of the Cinque Terre village of Vernazza by Julie Colclough. Julie was staying in one of the houses shown in the painting (the pink house on the left overlooking the sea). She loved walking the cliff paths and also travelling by boat and train to visit all five of the Cinque Terre fishing villages, in addition to St. Margherite and Portofino further north. Her sketchbooks from the trip illustrate her visits to Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso, and inspired this and several other paintings on her return to the studio.
An early start was required to walk up onto the cliff path to wait for the sun to rise : as hoped, it lit the landscape perfectly and Julie thoroughly enjoyed sketching the magnificent view.
